Ariel Winter has revealed that her Modern Family character Alex will be more "popular" in the new season.

Speaking to E! Online, Winter explained that Alex will change slightly as she grows up.

"Alex gets a little friend who probably will develop into something more," she said. "Alex is turning into a teenager and maybe more of the popular girl. She'll still be the know-it-all, the smart alec, but she's just going to be a little popular."

Winter added that the relationship between Alex and her big sister Haley (Sarah Hyland) may change slightly.

"I don't think Alex really cares what her big sister thinks," she said. "I think once she becomes top dog in her school, it's going to be, 'Hey, I'm as cool as [you] now so you can't say anything. I can still make fun of you, but you can't make fun of me'."
Ariel Winter has revealed details of a number of upcoming storylines on Modern Family.

Winter, who plays Alex, told E! Online that the second season opens with a natural disaster.

"In our very first episode there's an earthquake and someone gets stuck in a bathroom with the plumber," she said. "I'm not going to give away [who], because that would ruin it."

Winter hinted that there will be some romances in the new season, saying: "Alex may - or may not - get a boyfriend. And Manny [Rico Rodriguez] gets some special girl time!"

Winter also revealed that viewers will be satisfied with the kiss between Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cameron (Eric Stonestreet).

"Fans, you will get what you wanted," she said. "Everyone is going to get what they wanted, and it's going to be epic. Fans, watch!"

The second season of Modern Family begins on September 22 on ABC.
